Centre for Women’s Justice (CWJ) is a UK legal charity dedicated to holding the state to account for violence against women and girls. Its work aims to ensure victim-survivors are heard, protected and treated fairly, while creating lasting improvements to the systems meant to serve them.
CWJ undertakes carefully selected strategic litigation, bringing legal challenges designed to address systemic failures in the state’s response to male violence. It also develops projects, researches issues and advocates for changes to law, policy and practice. As a designated police super-complaint body, CWJ can raise concerns about widespread or systemic policing problems.
The charity supports frontline women’s organisations through training, specialist resources and second-tier legal advice for staff assisting victim-survivors. It also helps connect women’s sector advocates with lawyers experienced in violence against women and girls. CWJ shares expert commentary with journalists and contributes to public understanding through press updates, research and educational resources.
CWJ has a small team and takes on a limited number of strategic cases.
