About Centropa
Centropa is a brand that was established in Vienna and Budapest in 2000 with the aim of preserving Jewish memory in Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the Baltics, and the former Soviet Union. Their goal is to collect stories about the entire 20th century from over a thousand elderly Jews living in these regions. Instead of using video interviews, Centropa digitized over 25,000 privately-held family photographs and personal documents, while simultaneously recording the stories of these individuals.
The interviews took place between 2000 and 2009. Over the years, Centropa has expanded its offerings to include thematic websites, multimedia films, traveling exhibitions, educational programs, illustrated books, and more, all based on their archive. They have also produced documentary films, walking tour apps, and podcasts.
Centropa's main office is located in Vienna, with educational teams operating in Budapest, Hamburg, and Washington DC. Their dedication to preserving Jewish memory and educating the public is evident in the diverse range of programs and projects they are involved with. Centropa is a non-profit organization that relies on the support of donors, partners, and supporters to carry out its mission
