CETRAD was founded in July 2002 as a successor of the Laikipia Research Programme (1976-1997), and so builds on the long-term pre-investment research facility.

About CETRAD
CETRAD, the Centre for Training and Integrated Research in ASAL Development, is a collaborative effort between the Kenyan government (via the Ministry of Water & Sanitation and Irrigation) and the Swiss Confederation (through the University of Berne's Centre for Development and Environment). Founded in July 2002 as the successor of the Laikipia Research Programme, CETRAD is a leading institution, building on a long-term pre-investment research facility. Based in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, CETRAD aims to study and enhance the potential and utilization of ASALs (Arid and Semi-Arid Lands) in Kenya.
Their mandate includes the assessment and evaluation of resources in these areas. By empowering local communities through information dissemination and enhancing the expertise of ASAL planners and development agents, CETRAD strives to contribute effectively to ASAL development. With a focus on sustainable development, land use planning, promotion of resource use and management, and infrastructure and services, CETRAD conducts research and offers a diverse range of products and services.
