About Charles River Food Co-op
Charles River Food Co-op is a community-owned grocery store that is dedicated to providing high-quality and fresh food options to the residents of Watertown, Newton, and Waltham. With the closure of Russo's, there was a need for a new grocery option in these areas, and Charles River Food Co-op was established to fill that void. As a hybrid model, both workers and consumers share ownership of the enterprise, creating a unique and inclusive ecosystem.
The co-op operates based on the principles of democracy, equality, and social responsibility. Each member-owner has an equal vote in the decision-making process, and the board of directors, composed of co-op owners, oversees and leads the co-operative on behalf of the owners. The co-op also values education and training, providing opportunities for members to contribute effectively to its development.
Incorporated as a co-operative corporation in Massachusetts, Charles River Food Co-op has seen significant support from the community, with over 340 members joining in just the first 2 months.
