About Charleston Museum
Welcome to the Charleston Museum, America's First Museum, located at 360 Meeting Street in downtown Charleston. Established in 1773, we have been dedicated to discovering, preserving, interpreting, celebrating, and sharing the rich history and culture of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Explore our permanent exhibits, such as the Lowcountry History Hall, which showcases the Native Americans, colonists, and enslaved African Americans who shaped the region.
Journey to the Museum's Armory to view a remarkable collection of historic weaponry dating from 1750 to the twentieth century. Learn about Charleston's pivotal role in the American Revolution at our exhibit, Becoming Americans, and discover the city's Civil War history at City Under Siege. Immerse yourself in the diverse creatures and geologic changes of the Lowcountry at the Bunting Natural History Gallery.
For younger visitors, the Kidstory exhibit brings Charleston's history to life through interactive displays.
