Checkmat BTX

Checkmat BTX is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy in Brownsville, Texas, bringing the training and culture of the Checkmat team to the Rio Grande Valley. Founded by Professor Jose Gutierrez, the academy offers instruction for children and adults, along with private one-on-one sessions. Its programs emphasize practical techniques, personal development, and continuous improvement.

The children’s classes use games and drills to teach jiu-jitsu skills while supporting coordination, flexibility, cardio, situational awareness, and endurance. Adult classes cover established techniques and concepts shared through Checkmat’s network of high-level black belts. Students are encouraged to develop an individual style while building functional strength, cardiovascular fitness, and the ability to think strategically under pressure. Private sessions with Professor Gutierrez are available for students seeking more focused instruction in either Gi or No-Gi jiu-jitsu.

Gutierrez’s training includes time with Checkmat founder Master Leo Vieira and other accomplished grapplers. Checkmat BTX is located at 1393 East Alton Gloor Boulevard, Suite 5, and offers bilingual communication. For information, call (956) 551-4419 or email [email protected].
