Chester-le-Street Heritage Group is a registered charity dedicated to researching and sharing the history of Chester-le-Street and its surrounding area. Formed in 1986, the group grew from the Chester-le-Street Local History Society, which began in the mid-1960s. Its work supports local history enthusiasts, family researchers, professional historians and anyone curious about the town’s past.
The group preserves and shares its research through newsletters, books, digital media and its website. Its publications include accounts of the Bevin Boys, men conscripted during the Second World War to work in the mines, and a tribute to local people killed in the First World War. The group also offers access to extensive historical archives, including photographs, and welcomes visitors to its regular drop-in sessions and meetings. Members and visitors can share memories, ask questions and explore local records.
For visitors, the Chester-le-Street Heritage Trail provides a circular walk through the town’s history, from the Roman period to the present, with way markers, information boards and plaques.
