Chesterwood is the former summer estate of Daniel Chester French (1850–1931), one of America’s most celebrated sculptors. Located in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, the historic site preserves the home, studio, and gardens where French lived and worked. His best-known works include the Minute Man in Concord and the seated Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial.
Set across 122 acres, Chesterwood features French’s studio, a restored Colonial Revival residence, gardens, and woodland walks designed by the artist. The residence displays original antiques and decorative objects, while French’s sculptures and works by other prominent artists can be seen throughout the property. Owned and operated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Chesterwood invites visitors to explore the artist’s legacy through tours, exhibitions, classes, artist residencies, and family programs. Its events include the ArtsAlive! Performance Series, garden gatherings, wine tastings, and special programs. The organization also offers memberships, accepts donations, and sells books and reproductions. Weddings and other special occasions are among the experiences available at the estate.
