Chikushinkai is a traditional Japanese martial arts dojo founded in 2004 and based at Timbarra Community Hall in Berwick, Melbourne’s South East. It offers weekly training in Iaido, the art of drawing and using the Japanese sword, and Jodo, the practice of techniques with a wooden staff. Classes focus on forms, or kata, developing physical skill alongside discipline and respect.
The dojo teaches Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei (ZNKR) Iaido and Jodo, as well as the classical traditions Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido and Shinto Muso Ryu Jodo. Jodo training includes solo and paired basic techniques and forms, while Iaido practice includes solo forms. Chikushinkai’s experienced instructors guide students through training, with classical study offered according to experience and instructor guidance.
Saturday sessions cover Jodo in the morning and Iaido afterward; an additional Wednesday evening session is available. The dojo is affiliated with the Victorian Kendo Renmei and Australian Kendo Renmei. Visitors are welcome, and newcomers can try a class and train free for their first month.
