The CHILD Cohort Study is a prospective longitudinal birth cohort study examining the developmental origins of health and disease. CHILD recruited over 3,500 pregnant women who gave birth between 2009 and 2012, in Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Toronto. CHILD is following their children from before birth to school age and beyond, capturing information on them, their parents and environments from biological samples, questionnaires, home assessments and clinical assessments. The core mission of CHILD is to advance knowledge about the genetic and environmental determinants of atopic diseases including asthma, allergy, allergic rhinitis, and eczema through trans-disciplinary and longitudinal study, with the goal of advancing the health status and well-being of children in Canada.

The CHILD Cohort Study is a groundbreaking prospective longitudinal study in Canada, focusing on the health and development of children from mid-pregnancy into adolescence. Launched in 2008 with support from AllerGen NCE Inc. The study collects invaluable data through biological samples, questionnaires, home assessments, and clinical evaluations to create detailed profiles of both children and parents.
CHILD aims to understand the genetic and environmental factors contributing to atopic diseases like asthma, allergies, and eczema. By following participants over time, researchers can identify early-life exposures that influence long-term health outcomes. The findings from this comprehensive initiative are expected to shape medical practices, parenting choices, and public policies aimed at enhancing children's health. With contributions from over 20 scientific disciplines, the CHILD Cohort Study represents a vital resource in advancing knowledge to promote healthier futures for Canadian families.
