Children of Fire is a charitable organisation formed by sister charities registered in South Africa and the United Kingdom. For more than 30 years, it has worked to support young survivors of burn injuries across Africa, including injuries caused by fire, chemicals, electricity and hot liquids. Its mission combines care for survivors with education and prevention in the communities where they live.
The organisation’s work includes supporting children with burns and disabilities, helping them pursue challenging activities, and raising awareness of burn safety and the needs of survivors. Its programmes have included mountain-climbing experiences designed to build confidence and demonstrate that injury or disfigurement need not define a child’s capabilities. Children of Fire also advocates for survivors and seeks assistance with legal matters affecting its work and the children it supports.
Looking ahead, the charity hopes to establish Chishamiso, a paediatric burns hospital in sub-Saharan Africa, with facilities including operating theatres, wards and a keloid research centre. It welcomes volunteers, professional support, media partnerships and sponsorship for its initiatives.
