About Children’s Healthcare
Children’s Healthcare Is a Legal Duty (CHILD), Inc. was a child advocacy organization founded in 1983 by Rita and Douglas Swan. It worked to protect children from harmful religious and cultural practices, particularly faith-based medical neglect, through public education, research, legal action, and limited lobbying. Its work addressed issues including religious exemptions from immunization and health screening, corporal punishment, exorcism, polygamy, quackery and folk remedies, child-caring facilities, and child welfare policy. The organization also shared information about legal decisions, legislation, insurance, and cases involving children harmed or killed through medical neglect.
CHILD dissolved as a membership organization in 2017 and is no longer an active tax-exempt charity. Its website remains available as an archive of its activities from 1983 to 2017, with resources for advocates, including policy materials, state-by-state information, news, and Rita Swan’s memoir, The Last Strawberry. The site also points visitors to CHILD USA, a successor nonprofit focused on ending child abuse and neglect through evidence-based research and public policy, and to IdahoChildren.org for information about the situation in Idaho.
