About Catholic Historical Research Center of the AOP
The Catholic Historical Research Center (CHRC) of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, established in 1989 by Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, is dedicated to gathering, preserving, and disseminating historical resources that illuminate the development of Catholicism in the United States. Located in Philadelphia, CHRC houses extensive collections that include records from the Archdiocese and the American Catholic Historical Society, the oldest Catholic historical society in the nation.
The center's mission is to support research by providing access to a wealth of archival materials, including parish histories, photographs, newspapers, and digital collections. Researchers can take advantage of various services such as citations, online exhibits, and curated guides to explore the rich heritage of the Catholic Church. Additionally, the CHRC actively engages the community through internships and volunteering opportunities, enriching the understanding of Catholic history and culture. Visitors can access their resources in person or through their comprehensive online catalog, promoting greater awareness of the Catholic legacy within the region.
