About Christ Church Cathedral
The Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Project aims to rebuild and restore the Anglican Cathedral in Christchurch, New Zealand, which was severely damaged during the Canterbury earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. This project is dedicated to making the cathedral safer and better equipped, ensuring it takes its central place in Cathedral Square once again. The rebuilt cathedral will serve as a spiritual home for Anglicans and will also welcome individuals of all faiths.
It will bring vibrancy back to the heart of the city and provide space to support the wider community. The project, which began in May 2020, is divided into three phases: stabilisation, main cathedral strengthening and reinstatement, and the construction of the Visitors' Centre and Cathedral Centre. Throughout the rebuild, the heritage features of the cathedral will be retained, ensuring its historical significance is preserved.
This collaborative project involves close coordination between the clients, designers, engineers, contractors, and heritage professionals to protect the cathedral's heritage fabric. By the end of 2027, the Christ Church Cathedral will be open to all, offering a renewed sense of inspiration and connection
