The Charity Christmas Puzzle is an annual crossword initiative created by Gordon Gray to raise money for charitable causes. First set in 1991, it presents a themed puzzle for people who enjoy solving quality newspaper crosswords, with clues and thematic guidance designed to help solvers make progress when the challenge becomes difficult. The 2025 edition is titled “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary,” marking the puzzle’s 35th year.
The puzzle has attracted entries from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Cyprus, Malta and Ireland. Across its history, it has raised almost £150,000 for more than 100 good causes. Donations, apart from prize money, are passed to charity; the 2025 proceeds are to be shared equally among Thames Valley Air Ambulance, the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability, The Therapy Garden, Canal & River Trust, and St Mary’s Church in Eaton Bray.
The website offers the current puzzle for download, email registration for future editions, past puzzles, winner and results information, solver comments, unusual words, honours rolls, donation details and a blog.
