CHWC

Central Highlands Wildlife Carers (CHWC) is a volunteer, not-for-profit wildlife care and rehabilitation group serving Central Highlands communities in Queensland. Its coverage includes Emerald, Clermont, Moranbah, Dysart, Capella, Tieri, the Gemfields, Blackwater and Springsure, extending across the surrounding countryside. The group responds to calls from its emergency hotline, local veterinarians, community members and travellers who encounter native animals in need.

CHWC supports local volunteer carers who provide care in their homes for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. Its approach is to rescue, rehabilitate and release animals, with the organisation caring for an average of around 500 animals each year. Its licensed animal groups include macropods, koalas, possums, wombats, echidnas and birds. CHWC also offers advice to people who find an animal, helping them contact the group so an appropriate treatment plan can be arranged.

Alongside animal care, CHWC aims to support its carers and educate the community about local wildlife.
