The ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA) is an Indian research institute established in 1987 under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, within the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. Headquartered in Chennai, it serves as the national nodal agency for developing brackishwater aquaculture in India, with experimental and research centres including Muttukadu and Kakdwip, as well as centres in Gujarat.
CIBA conducts research to support sustainable aquaculture, with work spanning shrimp and finfish culture, nutrition, genetics and biotechnology, aquatic animal health, and the environment. Its research addresses practical challenges such as disease management, farming methods, animal health, and production. The institute develops and shares aquaculture technologies, advisories, publications, manuals, and other resources for farmers and sector professionals. It also provides training and capacity-building programmes, including initiatives aimed at entrepreneurship and technical skills. CIBA’s facilities include laboratories, hatchery resources, a library, and conference and accommodation facilities. Through research, collaboration, training, and technology transfer, the institute supports the advancement of brackishwater aquaculture and the people involved in the sector.
