About CinBA
Creativity and Craft Production in Middle and Late Bronze Age Europe (CinBA) was a European research project examining creativity and craft traditions during the Bronze Age. Led by Dr Joanna Sofaer of the University of Southampton, it brought together universities, museums, archaeological organisations and the Crafts Council, including partners in Southampton, Cambridge, Trondheim, Denmark, Vienna, Zagreb and Lejre. The project was funded through the Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) Joint Research Programme.
CinBA investigated pottery, textiles and metalwork, exploring how decorative motifs, techniques and specialist skills developed over more than a millennium across Scandinavia, Central Europe and the Adriatic. Researchers studied objects to understand both local and cross-regional creative activity, while also considering connections between ancient making and contemporary creativity. The project engaged modern craftspeople and the public through maker activities, exhibitions and other outreach. Its website shares research outputs, publications, videos, databases, maps and educational resources, alongside news and project materials.
