The Cinémathèque suisse is Switzerland’s national film archive, dedicated to preserving, restoring, showcasing and sharing the country’s cinematic heritage alongside films from around the world. Founded in 1948, it is recognised by the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) as one of the world’s ten most important film archives, reflecting the breadth, diversity and quality of its collections. Its holdings include around 100,000 film titles and 210,000 kilometres of film stock.
Across five sites, the institution employs approximately 100 people and operates two cinemas, presenting about 1,000 screenings each year. Visitors can explore its collections and online features, attend screenings, and discover news and information about the archive. The Cinémathèque also offers film distribution, a shop, cultural mediation and educational screenings, as well as consultations, visits and venue hire.
Additional services include image requests, donations and deposits, and online enquiries. Through its screenings, collections and public programmes, the institution makes film history accessible and supports engagement with cinema
