City Shamba

City Shamba is a Nairobi-based initiative working to address hunger and malnutrition through urban agroecological farming. It helps households, schools, hospitals, community groups, women, youth, and small-scale farmers turn underused city spaces into productive gardens and build practical skills in organic and regenerative agriculture. Its Agroecological Resource and Information Hubs offer hands-on, on-farm learning, while the organisation supplies inputs such as organic fertilisers, seedlings, and vertical gardens to help people start growing food.

City Shamba’s solutions include the Vertical Haven, a space-efficient structure designed for vegetable production on rooftops, balconies, and in small backyards, with attention to water use. Its waste-to-value work uses composting and Black Soldier Fly technology to convert kitchen waste into organic fertiliser and livestock protein. The initiative also offers field tours and training for school pupils, students, residents, and other groups, alongside products and tailored bookings. Through education, garden development, local leadership, and green livelihood opportunities, City Shamba aims to improve access to fresh, nutritious food and strengthen community food systems.
