About Civic Education Kenya (CEKA)
Civic Education Kenya (CEKA) is a civic technology initiative focused on making public institutions and democratic processes easier to understand and access. The project emerged from the persistent gap between official civic information and the everyday ability of citizens to locate, interpret, and use that information in practical situations such as voter registration, public participation, and engagement with legislative processes.
CEKA develops publicly accessible digital tools that organize civic knowledge into structured, usable formats. These tools include searchable civic resources, geographic directories of public offices, and simplified explanations of legislation and institutional procedures. The platform is designed to help citizens locate nearby offices, understand administrative requirements, and access official sources without relying on fragmented or informal information channels.
The project operates with an emphasis on transparency, verifiability, and accessibility. Content is based on publicly available legal and administrative sources, with priority given to clarity of language and contextual explanation. Technical design focuses on reliability under varying connectivity conditions, with lightweight interfaces, efficient data delivery, and features that support offline access where possible.
CEKA also maintains an open development approach, allowing technologists and civic actors to contribute improvements to tools and datasets. This collaborative structure encourages ongoing refinement of civic resources while preserving nonpartisan positioning and independence from political organizations.
The initiative functions as a complementary layer to official institutions rather than a substitute for them. It directs users toward authoritative services and documentation maintained by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission and other public bodies while providing contextual guidance that helps citizens navigate those systems more effectively.
