About Honolulu Civil Beat
Honolulu Civil Beat is a nonprofit news organization dedicated to providing the people of Hawaii with accurate and in-depth information. Our goal is to foster an informed community that works towards making Hawaii a better place to live. Since our launch in 2010 by entrepreneur and philanthropist Pierre Omidyar, we have been committed to delivering investigative journalism, enterprise reporting, analysis, and commentary that addresses issues of importance to our community.
We go beyond traditional print and television media approaches to ensure that our readers have access to a broad perspective on local issues. To make our content accessible to more people, we removed our paywall in 2016 and transitioned to nonprofit status. As a member of the Institute for Nonprofit News, we receive substantial support from Pierre and Pam Omidyar through the Omidyar Ohana Fund.
We also rely on donations from individuals, foundations, and businesses. At Honolulu Civil Beat, we strive to challenge our leaders to do better and hold them accountable. We believe in the power of informed citizens, and we provide various platforms for open and civil discussions on important public issues.
In addition to our online platform, CivilBeat. org, we host public events, including Civil Cafes and Hawaii Storytellers, and engage our community through social media outlets like Facebook. Our dedicated team of reporters and editors investigates wrongdoing, highlights significant issues, and serves as a voice for those who feel unheard.
We have received numerous journalism awards, including being named the best news website in Hawaii for the past nine years by the Society of Professional Journalists. Transparency is crucial to us, and we are committed to being a good community partner. We believe that news is a public asset, and we are here to provide accurate and trustworthy information to our readers.
We adhere to the highest journalistic standards and ethics, following the guidelines set by the Society of Professional Journalists and the Associated Press. Supporting Civil Beat means supporting independent and impactful journalism that helps shape and nurture our community. We are the only news outlet in Hawaii dedicated to public affairs reporting, and we rely on our readers and donors to sustain our mission.
Join us in our commitment to a better Hawaii by donating and becoming part of our engaged community
