The National Coalition for a Civil Right to Counsel (NCCRC) is an organization dedicated to ensuring access to the courts for all individuals. Founded in 2003, their mission is to advocate for a right to counsel in civil cases involving basic human needs such as shelter, safety, health, and child custody. With over 600 participants and partners in 45 states, the NCCRC is actively working to expand the recognition and implementation of this right across the country.

Currently, in the United States, the right to counsel only applies to criminal cases, leaving many individuals without legal assistance in critical civil cases. This lack of representation has contributed to a growing justice gap and worsened the indigent defense crisis. Losing a civil case can have far-reaching consequences, affecting not only immediate circumstances but also causing long-term difficulties with employment, education, and mental well-being.

The NCCRC believes that providing counsel in civil cases not only ensures justice but also helps to save money in the long run. They advocate for equal access to legal representation, particularly for marginalized groups disproportionately affected by these issues.
