Tunnel Hill Heritage Center & Museum invites visitors to explore more than 160 years of railroad and Civil War history in Tunnel Hill, Georgia. The museum presents local history through a collection of distinctive artifacts and introduces the story of the Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel. Completed in 1850, this 1,477-foot engineering landmark was the first major railroad tunnel in the South and the first through the Appalachian Mountains. Visitors can take a guided or self-guided tour to see original construction drill marks and learn about the tunnel’s role in the 1862 Great Locomotive Chase.
The experience also includes the historic Clisby Austin House, built in 1848. Used as a Confederate field hospital during the Civil War, it later served as Union General William T. Sherman’s headquarters while he planned the Atlanta Campaign. The center offers guided tours Monday through Saturday, with self-guided visits also available. Group pricing can be arranged in advance, and children aged three and under enter free.
