CleanAtlantic is a transnational environmental project focused on tackling marine litter across the Atlantic Area. Coordinated by Centro Tecnológico del Mar, Fundación CETMAR, it was supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme. The project aimed to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services by strengthening the ability of partners and stakeholders to monitor, prevent and remove marine litter.

Its work covered marine litter assessment and monitoring, modelling, analysis of risks and impacts, and waste management, cleaning and removal. CleanAtlantic also developed training and awareness activities, tools, protocols and guidelines, and shared project results through publications, workshops, events and other communications.

The project’s online resources include the CleanAtlantic Knowledge Tool, a Marine Litter Viewer, a modelling platform, and maps and databases, including a database of initiatives. The website also provides information about the project’s work packages, partner institutions, results and events. CleanAtlantic highlights the need for coordinated approaches involving public and private stakeholders, NGOs and society to address the environmental, health and economic impacts of marine litter.
