Clean Virginia Waterways

Clean Virginia Waterways (CVW) is a statewide nonprofit organization working to reduce plastic pollution and marine debris in Virginia. Active since 1995, it promotes cleaner rivers, streams, bays, beaches, and groundwater through research, education, community involvement, and practical prevention efforts. CVW organizes Virginia’s annual river and beach cleanups, including the International Coastal Cleanup, and supports volunteers in joining or leading local events and collecting cleanup data.

The organization develops educational programs and outreach resources for communities and educators, with topics including plastic pollution, stormwater, foam, and balloon litter. Its research and publications examine aquatic debris such as cigarette butts, balloons, food and beverage containers, microplastics, and abandoned vessels and fishing gear. CVW also advances policy solutions, co-founded the Virginia Plastic Pollution Prevention Network, and co-authored the Virginia Marine Debris Reduction Plan with the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program. Affiliated with Ocean Conservancy, CVW provides opportunities to volunteer, participate in community science, attend events, and support its work through donations.
