Clearwater Farms is a fifth-generation, family-owned and operated dryland grain farm on North Central Idaho’s Camas Prairie. Established in 1895, it began when German immigrant Fredrich Riggers homesteaded near Nezperce. Today, Nathan and Christine Riggers, together with their son Christopher and his spouse Natalie, own and manage the farm.
The region’s distinctive geography and climate support a diverse range of crops used in foods and beverages, including bread, noodles, craft beer, and hummus. Clearwater Farms offers finished malt products and cleaned, processed raw grains for end users. It also provides agricultural services to farmland owners, including custom farming operations and lease or purchase arrangements.
The farm emphasizes ecologically sustainable practices. Its crops are grown using direct seeding and no-till or minimum-till methods, which leave the soil undisturbed and covered with plant residue to help reduce erosion and sediment loss to nearby watersheds. Clearwater Farms is certified and accredited Salmon-Safe, an independent ecolabel that verifies farm practices intended to protect water quality and habitat.
