the Climate Investment Funds

The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) is a major climate finance mechanism that supports developing and middle-income countries in accelerating climate action. With almost $14 billion in resources, CIF helps countries pursue transformations in clean technology, energy access, climate resilience, and sustainable forests. Its portfolio spans 82 countries and includes 11 programs, covering areas such as renewable energy, energy storage, coal transition, climate-smart cities, forest investment, and resilience.

CIF provides approved funding and works with multilateral development banks and country partners to mobilize additional investment. Its 471 approved projects represent $9.4 billion in CIF funding and an expected $98.6 billion in co-financing, including contributions from governments, development banks, bilateral partners, and the private sector. Beyond financing, CIF supports planning, technical assistance, knowledge sharing, evaluation, and learning to help strengthen climate programs and their results. The organization also publishes reports, guidance, and project information, and engages stakeholders including governments, civil society, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and the private sector.
