About Convention on Cluster Munitions
The Convention on Cluster Munitions is an international treaty committed to addressing the humanitarian consequences and harm caused by cluster munitions. With over 100 states as members, the Convention prohibits the use, production, transfer, and stockpiling of cluster munitions. Adopted on May 30, 2008, and entered into force on August 1, 2010, the Convention has made significant strides in returning land to productive use, destroying stockpiles, educating at-risk communities, and assisting cluster munition victims.
Currently, there are 124 states that have committed to the goals of the Convention, with 112 being full States Parties and 12 as signatories. The Convention's implementation plays a crucial role in advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals, promoting international peace and security, as well as upholding human rights and international humanitarian law. As the 15th anniversary of the Convention approaches on May 30, 2023, the Eleventh Meeting of States Parties (11MSP) is scheduled to take place from September 11 to 14, 2023, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
