About Coimisiún na Meán
Coimisiún na Meán is a brand that has been established under the provisions of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act 2022. This act has amended the Broadcasting Act 2009 to create Coimisiún na Meán, which now undertakes the functions of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland as the regulator for broadcasting in Ireland. In addition to its role as a regulator, Coimisiún na Meán is tasked with establishing a regulatory framework for online safety, updating the regulation of television broadcasting and audiovisual on-demand services, and transposing the revised Audiovisual Media Services Directive into Irish law.
The brand is led by an Executive Chair and three Commissioners, who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in regulation, government, and business in the communications and online sectors. Jeremy Godfrey, the Executive Chair, has over 30 years of regulatory experience and has been involved in various regulatory developments such as the EU's Digital Services Act. Niamh Hodnett, the Online Safety Commissioner, has extensive experience in designing and enforcing regulatory obligations in the online and communications fields.
She has a strong background in data protection, cybersecurity, competition, and consumer protection. Rónán Ó Domhnaill, the Media Development Commissioner, has advocated for strengthening language legislation in Ireland and has significant experience as a journalist. Celene Craig, the Broadcasting Commissioner, has over 30 years of experience in media regulation and has played a leadership role in strategic planning for legislative and structural changes in media regulatory regimes.
She is also actively involved in national, European, and global fora on legislative and regulatory matters. Overall, Coimisiún na Meán is committed to ensuring the safety and regulation of broadcasting and online services in Ireland, and its team of experienced commissioners brings a diverse range of expertise to the brand
