Coaching African American History offers guided tours on Jekyll Island that connect the history of the Igbo people of West Africa, in present-day Nigeria, with the Gullah and Geechee cultures of the Golden Isles. The experience explores the arrival of Igbo people on the island, the Middle Passage, and the history of enslavement, including the landing site at St. Andrews Park associated with the Wanderer ship. Guides share researched history alongside oral histories passed down through generations, helping visitors learn about the past while engaging with the present.
The 90-minute tour is organized into three 30-minute units: Igbo culture, the Middle Passage, and Gullah/Geechee culture. It includes hands-on elements such as replicas of Igbo and Gullah homes, musical instruments, and sweetgrass basket weaving. Visitors can book an individual ticket and join a group or arrange a group tour, with capacity limited to 15 people. Coaching African American History aims to make learning informative and engaging for individuals, families, and groups visiting Jekyll Island.
