Coal Transitions is an innovative international research platform dedicated to facilitating a sustainable transition away from coal dependency in major coal-using countries. Recognizing that coal accounts for 28% of global energy consumption, the initiative seeks to address the pressing need for significant reductions in coal use to satisfy the Paris Agreement commitments on climate change. Through comprehensive analyses and policy guidance, Coal Transitions promotes understanding among stakeholders regarding the socio-economic implications of transitioning from coal.
The platform fosters an inclusive approach by advocating for narratives that emphasize societal acceptance of coal phase-out strategies, aligning economic renewal with environmental goals. It serves as a nexus for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and the coordination of transition policies at the international level. Originating from a project funded by the KR Foundation and now hosted by TU Berlin’s CoalExit team, the platform continues to evolve, incorporating insights from various academic scholars and institutions. Coal Transitions is committed to advancing concrete action plans for a just and equitable transition from coal.
