COATI

City of Angels Training Institute (COA) provides education for people interested in becoming recovery coaches and for those seeking to strengthen their skills in the field. Based in New Jersey, the institute offers training designed to support people entering or sustaining recovery from addiction to alcohol or other drugs. COA combines the courses required by the New Jersey Addiction Certification Board for the Certified Peer Recovery Specialist credential and offers the CCAR Recovery Coach Academy, a seven-day intensive program focused on practical coaching skills.

The institute’s curriculum includes active listening, asking effective questions, mentoring, and supporting long-term recovery. Additional courses address ethical considerations in peer-based recovery support, professionalism, spirituality, compassion and caregiving, and life skills. COA also offers a Recovery Coach Academy professional designation course and a code of ethics for recovery coaches. Trainings are described as experiential and delivered in a retreat-like setting, with participants encouraged to practice skills and reflect on their own experiences.
