About Central Ok Emergency
Central Okanagan Emergency Management (COEM) serves as a vital support system during major emergencies in the Central Okanagan region, including cities such as Kelowna, West Kelowna, Lake Country, Peachland, and Westbank First Nation. Operating the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), COEM plays a crucial role when disasters, such as forest fires, floods, or airplane crashes, necessitate a coordinated response. The EOC is activated under specific scenarios: to assist when an event exceeds first responders’ capabilities, at their request for logistical support, or to manage public communication and assistance requests.
Staffed by trained personnel from various local governments, the EOC functions as the central hub for emergency response efforts, ensuring effective coordination and management of resources. Additionally, COEM aims to keep the public informed by providing real-time updates during emergencies. The organization encourages community involvement through volunteer opportunities with Emergency Support Services (ESS) and amateur radio communications, fostering a collaborative environment for disaster preparedness and response.
