The Comissão de Atletas Olímpicos (CAO) is a vital entity within the Comité Olímpico de Portugal (COP) that focuses on advocating for the rights and interests of athletes participating in the Olympic Games. Comprised of nine elected Olympians, the CAO serves as a representative body for active and retired athletes who have competed in the three most recent Olympic editions. Key figures include president Diana Gomes and vice-president Alexis Santos, both seasoned competitors in swimming.
The CAO operates under four strategic pillars, ensuring that athletes' voices are heard within both national and international sports systems. They provide essential services such as athlete education, inclusion initiatives, and support through various Olympic preparation programs. Additionally, the organization promotes sustainability and integrity within sports. Through their online store, App, and educational resources, the CAO fosters a community that encourages athletes to achieve their full potential while celebrating their contributions to Portuguese sports.
