About Common Ground Relief
Common Ground Relief is a grassroots, volunteer-based organization that was established in 2005 to provide disaster relief in the Greater New Orleans area following Hurricane Katrina. Initially offering assistance and support to local communities, the organization focused on providing housing, healthcare, clothing, legal services, and other core needs to residents in the aftermath of the hurricane. As the world-wide recession worsened and rebuilding efforts began, Common Ground Relief shifted its focus to building affordable and energy-efficient housing through the State of Louisiana's Road Home program.
The organization also created employment and job training opportunities for residents displaced by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. They built a model house in the Lower Ninth Ward, incorporating a stormwater filtration system using native plant material. In 2013, Common Ground Relief revised its mission statement to create environmentally sustainable, financially viable, and personally cohesive Gulf Coast communities.
Today, their primary focus is on restoring and preserving Louisiana's disappearing coastal wetlands. They have established various programs and initiatives, including food and water distribution centers, health clinics, legal clinics, shelters, and environmental learning centers. Through their efforts, Common Ground Relief has engaged over 65,000 volunteers in post-disaster recovery, provided hands-on environmental curriculum to local students, and planted thousands of trees and marsh grass each year.
Their work has contributed an estimated value of volunteer labor in excess of $40 million. The organization remains committed to its grassroots, volunteer-based approach, and strives to foster environmental and community stewardship in Southeast Louisiana, ensuring that residents can not only survive but thrive in the face of environmental challenges
