About COMMUNIA Association
COMMUNIA is an international association that actively promotes the expansion of the Public Domain, ensuring increased access to and reuse of culture and knowledge. As a network of passionate activists, researchers, and practitioners in Europe and the United States, COMMUNIA advocates for copyright policies that strike a balance, avoiding unnecessary restrictions on access and use. With a mission to foster and enrich the Public Domain, COMMUNIA traces its roots back to a European Commission-funded Thematic Network.
It defines the Public Domain broadly, encompassing works that are not protected by copyright, open licensing practices, and copyright limitations and exceptions. As an organization primarily focused on improving the EU copyright framework, COMMUNIA's work is guided by four principles derived from its 20 Policy Recommendations. These include defending and expanding the Public Domain, protecting and promoting usage rights, empowering creators and their audiences, and creating safeguards against copyright abuse.
COMMUNIA accomplishes its mission through advocacy, expertise, awareness-raising, strategic litigation support, and collaborations with other organizations. To sustain its efforts, COMMUNIA receives support from the Arcadia charitable fund and contributions from its members.
