to Community Networks

CommunityNets.org is dedicated to empowering communities by enhancing broadband accessibility and reliability. As a project of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, this initiative emphasizes local control and public ownership of telecommunications networks, catering to the unique needs of each community it serves. Through a wealth of resources, including case studies, fact sheets, and videos, CommunityNets.org equips community leaders with the knowledge necessary to develop and manage their own broadband solutions responsibly.

Recognizing that telecommunications infrastructure is vital for community health and vitality, CommunityNets.org promotes models that prioritize community accountability over corporate interests. By supporting public ownership, cooperative models, and other nonprofit approaches, they help ensure that local networks serve the inhabitants rather than external shareholders. The organization is backed by significant funding from the Ford Foundation and the Open Society Foundations, allowing them to advocate for policies that enhance community power and foster equitable opportunities across the United States.
