About Compmatphys
Computational Materials Physics is a free, open online course that teaches practical use of ab initio methods to predict material properties from the laws of quantum physics. Designed for materials scientists and anyone interested in the field, it focuses on conceptual understanding and hands-on training rather than mathematical theory. The course covers Density Functional Theory and its applications, with topics including crystallography, geometry optimization, electronic structure, chemical bonding, elasticity, magnetism, phonons, band gaps, and the modeling of supercells and surfaces.
Learning materials are provided through prerecorded videos, each accompanied by a task; many tasks receive automated or peer feedback. Visitors can access course videos and texts without registering, while free registration also enables participation in discussion forums, attendance at feedback webinars, and a request for a certificate of participation. During Ghent University’s fall term, instructors host weekly webinars to discuss student questions.
At other times, learners can study at their own pace, and there is an opportunity to join a team project
