About Computing at School
Computing at School (CAS) is the subject association for computing education in the UK. Since its establishment in 2008, CAS has played a key role in redefining computing education in England and has become a leading figure in a worldwide movement. With over 44,000 teachers and professionals supported so far, CAS has made significant contributions through its Communities of Practice, discussion forum, professional development events, and community-generated resources.
CAS focuses on empowering learners by providing them with the best possible computing education. As an independent organization, CAS works tirelessly to influence and support government initiatives, acting as a trusted voice at the national level. CAS is committed to creating a vibrant reality of computing education in every classroom across the UK.
They have built a vast network of communities of practice for computing teachers, both online and locally. CAS's vision is to ensure that every learner has the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in the digital age. They strive to achieve this through three core strands: TeachTogether, TechTeach, and Techspiration.
These strands aim to make computing education inclusive for all, support teachers in delivering high-quality computing education through professional development and events, and bring the world of technology into the curriculum, inspiring students about tech career pathways. As part of the CAS family, Barefoot is a program specifically designed for primary schools, combining comprehensive lesson plans, teacher professional development, interactive workshops, and specialist partnerships. CAS operates under the patronage of BCS (The Chartered Institute for IT) and is governed by the CAS Board.
It provides advice to the BCS School Curriculum and Assessment Committee, actively shaping the future of computing in schools while maintaining its grassroots style and autonomy. As the registered Subject Association for Computing with the CfSA, CAS represents subject associations nationally and advocates for research-based approaches in the curriculum, pedagogy, teacher training, and professional development. To stay informed about CAS's community activities, new initiatives, and teacher support programs, individuals can sign up for the CAS newsletter, receiving monthly updates on interesting stories and initiatives in the field of computing education
