Conundrum Press is an independent Canadian publisher founded by Andy Brown in 1996 and based in Mi’kma’ki/Nova Scotia. After beginning with chapbooks, short stories, novels, comics, and zine collections, the press focused exclusively on literary graphic novels in 2010. It publishes work for adults and teens, combining established artists with new voices and exploring a wide range of forms and subjects.
Its catalogue includes graphic novels, anthologies, short comics, and limited-edition collections, with works by Canadian and international creators. The EMANATA imprint, edited by children’s author Sal Sawler, develops character-driven fiction and nonfiction graphic novels for young adult readers. Customers can browse and purchase books through the Conundrum Book Store and Boutique, and the publisher shares news about releases, book launches, festivals, and other events.
Conundrum also offers an annual $1,000 mini-comic bursary for a Black or Indigenous creator living in Canada. Through its publishing, events, and creator support, the press contributes to a diverse and evolving graphic novel community
