About Convention Citoyenne pour le Climat
The Convention Citoyenne pour le Climat (Citizens’ Climate Convention) was a French democratic initiative created to involve citizens directly in developing measures to address climate change. Organized by the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE), it brought together 150 people selected by lot to reflect the diversity of French society. Their mandate was to propose ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% by 2030, compared with 1990 levels, while ensuring social justice.
The Convention provided a structured forum for members to learn, debate and prepare proposed legislative and regulatory measures. Its work covered topics including energy savings, home renovation, agriculture, transport and environmental taxation. Governance support included experts and participation professionals, while three guarantors oversaw the neutrality and integrity of discussions. The official website serves as an information and public engagement resource, featuring news, press materials, member profiles, details about the organization and its proceedings, livestreams, frequently asked questions, and opportunities for public contributions. It also shares the Convention’s 149 proposals and documents concerning government responses.
