CopFax is an independent, free, noncommercial public information project documenting police conduct across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Its national accountability database presents incidents linked to the publicly available videos or public records they are based on, helping readers review the source material. Users can browse by state or search for a police department or officer.

CopFax also provides practical resources related to police encounters and public accountability. Its plain-language Know Your Rights guides cover constitutional rights during police interactions, recording in public, and traffic stops. A guide for First Amendment auditors explains how to document public officials lawfully and publish responsibly. Visitors can also find information on filing a complaint against an officer or department, including what to include and what may happen next.

For people seeking government records, CopFax offers state-by-state public records law information, including response deadlines, and a public records request letter. The site publishes incident summaries, invites corrections supported by documentation, and allows named departments and officers to submit responses.
