About Traditional Aikido of Colorado Springs
Traditional Aikido of Colorado Springs is an adult-only dojo in central Colorado Springs, Colorado, dedicated to teaching Traditional Iwama-Ryu Aikido as a martial art. Its non-competitive approach emphasizes effective technique, safe cooperative practice, and steady development of fundamentals. Students learn responses to common striking and grappling attacks, including joint locks, throws, and methods for taking and redirecting an attacker’s balance. Training is designed to accommodate people with different ages, genders, sizes, and physical conditions, with intensity increasing as skills develop.
The dojo’s curriculum also includes Aiki-Ken sword and Aiki-Jo staff training, alongside instruction in safe falling, grounded movement, and strong body structure. The school highlights potential benefits such as improved fitness, balance, coordination, self-awareness, discipline, stress management, and ethically motivated self-defense skills. Instructors John Wiley and Elizabeth Hartman bring more than 40 years of combined experience and hold Aikikai ranks and Iwama-Ryu weapons certifications.
The dojo offers up to 10 hours of mat time weekly for a monthly fee, without contracts.
