Cotton made in Africa (CmiA) is an internationally recognised standard and initiative for more sustainable cotton produced by small-scale farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. It connects farmers and cotton companies with brands, retailers, manufacturers, and other supply-chain partners, helping bring verified African cotton into textile and apparel products. CmiAβs standard is built around four pillars: responsible management, people, planet, and prosperity.
It supports fair working conditions, womenβs empowerment, farmer training, stronger livelihoods, and environmental protection. CmiA cotton is GMO-free and grown using rainwater, while pesticide use is regulated and hazardous substances are banned. Independent third parties verify compliance, and traceability systems track cotton through ginneries and onward processing.
The initiative offers partnership and licensing pathways, supply-chain onboarding and implementation support, and both segregation and mass-balance sourcing models. It also provides impact information, farmer stories, reports, and marketing assets to help partners communicate their engagement. CmiA reports that nearly 715,000 farming families across nine African countries benefit from its programmes
