Counter Balance is a coalition of 9 NGOs with a mission to drive the transition towards socially and environmentally sustainable and equitable societies through European public finance. Founded in 2007, our primary aim was to challenge the European Investment Bank (EIB) and advocate for its reform. While EIB remains our main target, we have expanded our work to other public finance institutions as well.

As watchdogs, we closely monitor the operations of these institutions, championing for transparency, accountability, and the protection of climate justice, development, and human rights. Our goal is to hold EU public financial institutions accountable to their public mission and challenge harmful decisions, policies, and projects. Supported by a Secretariat and an active Board, Counter Balance is funded by member organizations, public funders, and private supporters who share our vision.
