About Country
Country is an open-source service offering a free IP-to-country geolocation API for developers and organizations. Its API identifies the country associated with the caller’s IP address or a supplied IPv4 or IPv6 address, and can return additional details such as city, continent, subdivision, postal code, geographic coordinates, and autonomous system number (ASN). Users can look up one address at a time or submit up to 100 IP addresses in a single request. The service requires no API key, has no usage quotas, and is available for commercial use, with infrastructure rate limits of 10 requests per second per IP to help prevent abuse.
Country’s geolocation data comes from MaxMind GeoLite2 and is refreshed daily; Cloudflare geolocation is used when available. The service also provides an information endpoint with data-update metadata and a machine-readable OpenAPI specification. For teams needing greater control or high-volume server-side access, Country offers a Docker-based self-hosting option, with setup requiring MaxMind credentials. The project has operated since 2015 and states that it does not log requests.
