The Islands Commission is a key geographical arm of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe, established in 1980 as its oldest commission. Representing eighteen regional island authorities across diverse regions including the Mediterranean, Baltic Sea, and various oceans, the Commission addresses the unique challenges faced by islands and their populations of approximately 15 million. Its primary mission is to advocate for policies that recognize and mitigate the disadvantages islands endure due to their insularity.

The Commission actively collaborates with EU institutions and national governments to push for better cohesion, improved transport links, and sustainable maritime practices. Moreover, it strives to create a comprehensive EU Islands Agenda, aimed at fostering interregional cooperation and development opportunities among member islands. Governed by an Assembly and supported by an Executive Secretary and dedicated team, the Islands Commission also engages in various projects related to energy, climate, and maritime affairs, ensuring the representation and advancement of island interests at both national and European levels.
