CRAST is a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization established and registered in Tanzania to research innovative climate adaptation solutions that build the resilience of vulnerable populations. The livelihoods and well-being of these people, especially in rural areas, are at risk. Smallholder producers (mainly farmers, livestock keepers, and fisherfolks), who make up about 80% of total food production in the country, face a mix of interrelated risks and challenges that threaten their livelihoods, food security, and nutrition. Therefore, CRAST is envisioned to ensure climate-resilient communities with adequate capacities to readjust livelihood engagement suitable for the present and anticipated impacts of climate change and variability. We aspire to become a role model organization in Tanzania and Sub-Saharan Africa for building capacities and gender-focused climate resilience among vulnerable communities and ecosystems, especially in rural areas. Our major objectives shall include: (i)To conduct climate science research and assessments that will provide climate adaptation solutions, especially for Tanzania's vulnerable communities and ecosystems. (ii)To provide technical support to vulnerable communities in re-adjusting livelihood practices for their resilience and poverty reduction. (iii)To explore and promote indigenous climate adaptation practices that have worked perfectly for a long time in specific communities within and outside the boundaries of Tanzania. (iv)Design and implement simple digitalized early warning and climate communication technologies to facilitate disaster preparedness and reduce risks associated with climatic extremes. (v)To work with partners in promoting and upscaling the production, dissemination, and utilization of indigenous and contemporary climate services for informed decision-making in livelihood development. About Climate Resilience and Adaptation Solutions Tanzania
CRAST Tanzania, or Climate Resilience and Adaptation Solutions Tanzania, is a pioneering non-governmental organization dedicated to fostering climate-smart communities and ecosystems for sustainable development. Established in January 2021 by a team of climate and natural resource experts, CRAST focuses on building capacity and enhancing gender-focused climate resilience among vulnerable populations, particularly in rural areas.
Headquartered in Morogoro, an agriculturally and ecologically significant region, CRAST aims to empower local communities by providing innovative climate adaptation solutions. Recognizing that the impacts of climate change disproportionately affect the poorest and most vulnerable communities, CRAST works to equip smallholder farmers, livestock keepers, and fisherfolk—who contribute to 80% of Tanzania's food production—with the tools they need to withstand climatic challenges.
