The Puerto Rican Crested Toad Conservancy is dedicated to supporting the recovery and conservation of the Puerto Rican crested toad, also known as the Sapo Concho. This distinctive species is the only toad native to Puerto Rico and is recognized by its characteristic head crest. Once found across Puerto Rico and Virgin Gorda, it has suffered from habitat loss and introduced species and is considered critically endangered.
The Conservancy shares information about the toad’s life history, distribution, habitat, and conservation status, helping visitors understand the challenges facing the species. Its work connects with broader recovery efforts focused on research, education and outreach, protecting existing habitat, building ponds, and establishing self-sustaining wild populations. Reintroduction is an important part of these efforts: since 1992, more than 300,000 captive-hatched tadpoles have been released in Puerto Rico through participating zoos.
The Conservancy also highlights monitoring, husbandry, field programs, and community partnerships. Supporters can contribute to its conservation efforts through GoFundMe or PayPal, helping advance the work of agencies, researchers, educators, and local communities
